I do scrappy crazy blocks with the strips and the scraps usually come in handy for my applique pieces. It wasn't long before it was obvious that soldiers on both sides would need blankets and quilts for warmth. When death stalked the wards, Clara Barton wrapped the scruffy quilts around lifeless soldiers as the army buried those lost in battle. I save in a pile the smallest leftovers if at least 1 inch. At least that's what I was taught way back in the day when I first learned to make string quilts. I love the challenge and the unique look achieved with smaller pieces. I have a hard time getting rid of any fabric! Carolyn Ducey, "Quilt History Timeline". Usually pretty small — if it is long, then as narrow as 1. I save even the tiniest of scraps. I will be making a charm quilt with them someday. I save just about everything… until lately. I save scraps as small as 1 inch square. Kinda like when Grandma cooked and everything went in it except for the kitchen sink. However, it may be both older and newer than you might think. Actually smaller pieces than that I use for thread spiders sewing onto at the end of chain piecing.
